Nova Scotia donair sauce is a thick, sweet and savory sauce that is typically served with Halifax Donair, a type of Mediterranean-inspired pita sandwich dish popular in Canada. The sauce is made with evaporated milk, sugar, vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. It is typically served at room temperature or slightly warmed.
Nova Scotia donair sauce is thought to have originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the 1970s. It was created by a Greek immigrant who owned a restaurant called King of Donair. It was a hit with customers, and it quickly became a staple of Nova Scotia cuisine.
